Josie Bassett Historic Cabin Restoration Project
At the end of Dinosaur National Monument's Cub Creek Road, on the Utah side of the park, is an old cabin nestled in a shady oasis. The cabin is empty now, but it continues to tell a story of one pioneer woman's life in this isolated and beautiful red rock canyon.

Though weathered by time the Josie Bassett Historic Cabin stands as a memorial to the pioneers who preceded us, a generation which faced hardship and isolation, but also which knew self-sufficiency, and a more wild and beautiful land than most of us will never see.

Dinosaur National Monument has begun to enhance the interpretive opportunities at the Josie Bassett Cabin by stabilizing the structure and restoring its historic appearance. To achieve this goal, the Monument has developed a partnership with the Intermountain Natural History Association to enlist the aid of the public.

Initial funding for this project was made available through reinvestment of park entrance fees. These funds, totalling $85,400, were used for technical site research and to prepare the Historic Structure Report and Project Plan. INHA's fund-raising efforts have allowed Phase One of this plan to address the immediate goal of structural stabilization including improved site drainage, rebuilding the cabin foundation, and repair or replacement of the roof, walls, windows and doors.

Josie's Cabin Restoration

Fundraising for Phase Two of the project has now begun. This will allow for the restoration of the cabin interior with original and historic period items. For information on how you can be a part of our efforts call (800) 845-3466.
